We got to see the latest restoration at a special event on the Paramount grounds, and it’s just stunning.

As fans of the franchise know, the film‘s original theatrical release was rushed, and many effects shots weren’t even finished. In 2001, original director Robert Wise worked with producer David C. Fein and curator Mike Matessino to execute his original vision for the film with various edits and special effects completed. This new version was applauded by fans but was only available in DVD quality. Now, Mr. Wise’s Vision is available in 4K with high dynamic range and an immersive Dolby Atmos soundtrack. With this new digital negative, the director’s edition can now be the definitive edition.

Unlike some later films in the series, Star Trek: The Movie is not an action-adventure film in space. It’s a cerebral sci-fi story with stunning visuals and a legendary score. All the more reason for the film to be seen with the best possible image and sound. The film takes its time. Watching it again, you can appreciate all the visual details that make V’Ger so compelling. You can also be transported by Jerry Goldsmith’s legendary score which is a symphony of intrigue and optimism.

Combining Wise’s vision with modern technology lets you enjoy film in new ways. The extent of the situation is clear as the Enterprise closes in on the threat. Kirk’s camaraderie with his crew through subtle looks and emotion hits home even more knowing that so many of them are now gone. The optimistic spirit of adventure of the score which harmonizes with the mechanical tones of V’ger comes to life in Atmos. These are just a few of the highlights of being able to re-enjoy the film.
