It’s NatGeo vs. HBO at 2022 Documentary PGA Awards

Nanfu Wang’s “In the Same Breath” faces off against “The Rescue”, filmmakers behind Oscar-winning “Free Solo”.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has revealed eight nominees for the 2022 documentary film who will pass the final ballot for the 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards. Nominees for the Documentary category are selected by the Documentary Nomination Jury, made up of at least fifty documentary producers who select between three and eight nominees for non-fiction cinema. Some 8,000 PGA members will make their selections ahead of the 33rd Annual Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

With the field of documentary awards overcrowded, being seen is the first order. The box office buzz is not a factor in this pandemic year, giving deep-pocketed distributors like NatGeo an edge. He has a long list of strong and widely seen nominees who have resulted in two of eight PGA nominations: Thai thriller “The Rescue” and COVID newspaper “The First Wave”. HBO also landed two nominees, Nanfu Wang’s Portrayal of China during COVID, “In the Same Breath,” and Megan Mylan’s Syrian Migrant Documentary “Simple As Water”.

Producers Guild Award winners sometimes repeat themselves on Oscar night. Last year, producer Craig Foster won the PGA Award for Best Documentary Film Producer for Netflix’s popular feature film “My Octopus Teacher,” which documented Foster’s connection to an octopus off the coast of Africa. from South ; the film also won the Oscar, as did the PGA winners “The Cove”, “Searching for Sugar Man”, “Amy” and “OJ: Made in America”.

But some PGA winners didn’t land Oscar nominations, including “Apollo 11,” “Won’t you be my neighbor? “,” Jane “and” Life Itself “.
