Pixar has released the official trailer for “Turning Red”, its first feature film directed by an Asian woman. Chinese-Canadian director Domee Shi is best known for her Oscar-winning short “Bao” and for her work on other Pixar films such as “Inside Out”.

“Turning Red,” due out March 11, tells the story of Mei, voiced by Rosalie Chiang, a 13-year-old “confident and stupid” Chinese-Canadian girl who grew up in the early 2000s, according to Pixar.

Mei soon discovers a secret that her mother, Ming, voiced by Sandra Oh, has kept from her. Their ancestors have a magical connection to red pandas, which means Mei will transform into a big red panda when she experiences certain intense emotions.

The trailer, which takes place on the 2000 NSync song “It’s Gonna Be Me,” shows how Mei has to deal with her teenage years and the seemingly impossible task of controlling her emotions to avoid turning into a red panda, and also how she must learn to accept who she is.

The film also stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, star of the Netflix show “Never Have I Ever”, as Priya, one of Mei’s friends.

A trailer released in July showed a scene with a turbaned Sikh security guard, considered the first sikh character in a Pixar movie.

“I rarely see these kinds of stories on the big screen in North America,” Shi told the Los Angeles Times in 2018 about “Bao”. “I’ve always been exposed to Asian cinema, Asian animation, so that was also one of my biggest influences. If I am given the opportunity to create my own short film, I will definitely take inspiration from those Asian influences because it’s just part of my creativity as a filmmaker.

The project, which will be a road film, will be released in December. Ranajoy Bhattacharya will mark the music of the film. Speaking about the film, Ditipriya said, “I played Adityada’s sister-in-law in Projapoti Biskut, and we’ve shared a cool relationship since then. Now I will work for his vision. During this time, I worked with Vikramda on an OTT project but there we were not opposed. Here we are. I loved the idea that it revolves around a road trip. I am a fan of road trips and therefore I think I would be able to totally identify with it.

Vikram also seemed quite excited. “Simple portrayal and a fresh approach are important aspects of the film. We are a new pair to the public and will be part of a good story and a good presentation. That’s what attracted me the most, ”he said.

Although Aditya entered showbiz as an actor, he has long written screenplays for popular directors. “I wrote scripts for Rajda (Chakrabarty), Raja Chanda and others. I have made commercials, short films and TV films. But it’s big for me. I’m going to make a full-fledged feature film for the big screen. That in itself is super exciting for me, ”he said.

In 2020, when a pandemic hit the world, many people had to change their plans and goals to adapt to the new way of life. For former USM Cody Curtis, he refused to let anything stop him from achieving his goal of creating a feature film highlighting mental health issues. From pre-production to post-production, including the festival circuit it currently encircles, Curtis’ feature film Suffocation has been an ongoing project for two years. A labor of love that has earned Curtis every minute.

Filming under COVID-19 restrictions had its stress for the set Suffocation team, but by following the necessary guidelines and safety precautions, they were able to complete production without a hitch. After filming, the editing process took place from early November 2020 to early May 2021. Although the editing process proved difficult at times, in the end Curtis said, “In the end, it turns out to be was definitely worth it because we released a product that we were actually quite proud of.

Asked about his general feelings about how the film turned out, Cutis said, “With any film project, there will always be things, whether it is a film or a theater project, there will be things. will always have things you wish you had improved. to. And while I have them in my head, I’m very happy with how the film came out in terms of the message I was trying to teach.

The film was well received by audiences at large, with some people with concerns giving advice on how to improve in the future, which Curtis will take into account in his future film projects. As for the festival circuit Suffocation is now an award-winning film, winning an award for Best Feature Film and Curtis winning the award for Best Director at the Hollywood International Golden Age Film Festival. Curtis said of winning the awards: “I’ve always seen the awards as the smallest of bonuses because what has always been most important to me has been telling a story and telling that story to the best of your ability. and if the rewards flow from it. , fantastic, but for me they were never the most important thing. But it feels good that the film got some recognition. “

The Suffocation project as a whole was a great success. Speaking of the main takeaways from the experience, Curtis said, “The biggest takeaway from the whole project for me would be that no matter how much I would love to do it all on my own, I have to rely more on people. ” In future projects, he plans to bring in more people to help in different ways to keep production running smoothly and to reduce some of the stress of making a movie.

Curtis has several upcoming projects he’s involved with, all three of which are shorts. He was assistant director and producer for the project of his friend Alex Cole, Grace which is now in post-production. He directs two other short films, one he wrote himself and one that Cole wrote. One of them, Delivery, will be released in November and the second, Up in smoke is set for December. An event will be organized to present the three short films in preview from the beginning to mid-January 2022.

“When I took the concept of Fresh kills to financiers and film distributors, I have been told that financial support depends on a main man in the film, as well as a male director, despite the fact that it is the story of women in the world mafiosi, ”Esposito said. “In addition to uplifting women’s stories and voices, I hope that Fresh kills will become a social movement. With Upstream, we aim to be a healthy competition for the bigger budget movies by mobilizing people to choose character-driven content that they can now participate in from the start as film investors.

In addition to purchasing Fresh Kills titles, fans in the US and around the world can support the Fresh kills film and movement by purchasing “NFT FRESH” (non-fungible tokens) which present exciting film-related opportunities, as well as images, videos or content from the film, cast and crew.

The independent feature film “They / Them / Us” is just the start of a new and growing local film industry in Columbus.

Showcasing a city that rarely gets to the big screen, “They / Them / Us” premieres Friday at the Lincoln Theater, followed by an after party at Wild Goose Creative. According to the “They / Them / Us” website, It was filmed in Columbus in August 2020 and follows the story of two divorced parents who fall in love and reunite their four children, as well as the challenges of parenting and starting a new relationship.

Jonathan Sherman, “They / Them / Us” director and co-writer and associate professor of film at Kenyon College, said the film’s goal was to present the Midwest in a way that previous films did. not done. Its characters occupy various identities, such as being non-binary, that exist across the United States – not just in coastal areas, according to the film’s website.

“I really wanted the city to be kind of almost like a character in the movie,” Sherman said.

Columbus has many beautiful filming locations, such as German and Victorian villages, Sherman said.

“One of my favorite little short scenes in the movie is a scene in the German village where the main characters are walking down the street and it’s beautifully lit, and the city looks great,” Sherman said.

Compared to other cities, such as New York or Los Angeles, Columbus is a very affordable city to shoot, Sherman said. He said the total budget for “They / Them / Us” was $ 550,000.

“Our filming budget in New York would have been $ 500,000, which is the total budget for the film,” Sherman said. “They charge a fortune.

Sherman said Chad Whittington, president and CEO of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts and executive producer of “They / Them / Us,” started a film fund, Columbus Pictures Film Fund, which selected “They / Them / Us ”as the first production, according to the film’s website.

“CAPA is launching a film fund that will support Columbus filmmakers and films set in Columbus or films made by Columbus filmmakers,” Sherman said. “The idea is to build a local film industry here.”

One of the hopes of this film was to involve film students from all over Ohio in the production so that they could connect with each other while growing the local film industry, Sherman said. This way, film students don’t necessarily have to move to New York or Los Angeles after graduation.

Desiree Levingston, production assistant for “They / Them / Us” and Ohio State 2020 alumnus, said she believes the film will show people in big cities that high-quality film production is possible in cities like Columbus.

“It’ll show them that there are teams in Ohio because I know a lot of people there don’t realize that people are working here in this industry,” Levingston said. “I think it will kind of expose people who are not from that area to the fact that there is room to grow up here and you don’t have to move elsewhere to do that.”

Tickets for the “They / Them / Us” premiere can be purchased on CBUSArts website. General admission is $ 5, and masks and proof of vaccination are required for entry.
