WhatsApp is known to be a popular messaging app, but they are adding something new – their very first short. The 12-minute film titled ‘Naija Odyssey’, stars NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and will be released this week. According to the official description, Giannis “tells his origin story of many origins as he reconciles his roots, his birthplace and his sense of belonging between cross-cultural worlds.” The Milwaukee Bucks star, 2021 NBA champion and Finals MVP, born in Greece to Nigerian parents, shares the story with his mother, Veronica.

The story is loosely based on the famous Greek poem “The Odyssey”. In the past, WhatsApp has been accused of spreading misinformation, particularly during the election process and the pandemic, and this short film will help counter that position. The content is part of the endorsement deal Giannis signed with the app in February.

“‘Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multi-faceted lives,” said Vivian Odior, WhatsApp’s global head of marketing, according to Forbes. “In navigating relationships, identity and even adversity, WhatsApp is there – allowing you to embrace all sides of you by connecting with those who matter most.”

Giannis helped promote the premiere on Instagram

Giannis is known for his fun attitude, silly dad jokes, and as someone who seems to really enjoy life. He often shares his life on Instagram and recently posted about the WhatsApp movie premiere. In the clip, Giannis is dancing and having a good time. The Bucks commented: “Dancing king🕺.” Other comments included “You’re probably one of the happiest people I’ve seen!”, “Man I love Giannis”, “I love your spirit 😃”, plus tons of emojis of heart and flame.

The Antetokounmpo family told their story in the movie “Rise”

The Antetokounmpo family is not new to talking about their journey. Earlier this year, Disney+ released the original movie “Rise” based on the true story of three young Nigerian-Green brothers, Giannis, Thanasis and Kostas, who came to the United States and rose to fame in NBA. The film shows the struggles the family endured to get to where they are today.

The official description of the film on Disney+ begins: “Audiences have never seen a story like that of the Antetokounmpos. After migrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badaki, respectively) struggled to survive and support their five children, while living under the daily threat of deportation. With their eldest son still in Nigeria with relatives, the couple desperately sought Greek citizenship but found themselves undermined by a system that blocked them at every turn. When they weren’t selling items to tourists on the streets of Athens with the rest of the family, the brothers – Giannis (Uche Agada) and Thanasis (Ral Agada) – played basketball with a local youth team.

Giannis often shares his father’s jokes

Giannis recently posted one of his famous dad jokes on Instagram to help promote the WhatsApp premiere. He captioned his video: “Been keeping this joke in mind for a while 😂😂 My new movie with @WhatsApp Naija Odyssey is out tomorrow. #WhatsAppPartner.

Viewers of his music video commented on their excitement for the new short as well as another one of his dad jokes. “Protect Giannis at all costs 😂”, “How can you not love man giannis”, “Why did this make me laugh 😂”, and many more filled in the comments section.

Director Miles Warren’s feature-length drama Bruiser has been acquired by Disney’s Onyx Collective ahead of its Discovery section premiere at TIFF. Bruiser marks the collective’s first narrative film, having acquired Questlove’s Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul in 2021. Miles is represented as a US business executive by the New York-based production company. Sparkling team.

Bruiser originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival as a short film.

A 14-year-old boy turns to a charismatic loner for help after being beaten, in director Miles Warren’s feature debut about fathers, families and the effects of fighting.

Darious (Hall), fourteen, has a lot going for him. His sometimes stern father, Malcolm (Anderson), works hard to keep his car dealership afloat and put Darious through private school, while Darious’ more level-headed mother, Monica (Shinelle Azoroh), does her best to make sure her son always has someone he can talk to. But there are things Darious can’t talk about. When a child beats him, humiliates him in front of his crush, he runs into the woods, where he meets Porter (Rhodes), a charismatic man with a burly physique who lives alone on a houseboat. The pair quickly become friends, with Porter offering to teach Darious how to defend himself. What Darious doesn’t know is that Porter is his biological father and abandoned Monica before she was born. Porter wants to make amends and be a part of the boy’s life, but his return unearths a secret history of brutality.

Born and raised in New York, Miles graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in film studies, distinguishing himself as an avid storyteller. His budding career gave him the opportunity to take on projects for cutting-edge fashion designers, The Blonds, and youth organization mentoring kids through basketball, New Heights. He is also a 2014 Tribeca Film Fellow and a 2016 Sundance Ignite Fellow.

In the short story by James Lee Burke winter lighta mixture of grief and conviction sets a professor in retirement across his inner circle and neighbors, with disastrous consequences.

Hannover-born Julian Higgins turned the story into a 2015 short of the same title and thought he was done with it.

But stories have a way of coming back, and the 2016 election brought back to Higgins’ mind Burke’s story of fractured communication and opposing worldviews.

“The themes of this one felt relevant in a new way,” Higgins said in a phone interview Wednesday. He called the story “a showdown between one person’s value system and belief system and a world that doesn’t seem to care”.

He did what artists around the world do: “I decided to trust my instincts and see where it led.

The result is God’s country, which opens in the United States, and at the Nugget Theaters in Hannover on Friday. Higgins’ feature debut, which he directed, co-wrote and co-produced, was made as a small independent film. But thanks to its blend of lyricism, realism and topicality, and an extraordinary performance by Thandiwe Newton, it sparked a bidding war and was picked up by IFC Films after its Sundance Film Festival screening.

In his second rendition of winter light, Higgins made substantial changes. He and co-writer Shaye Ogbonna recast the title character, turning a 58-year-old white man into a black woman in her 40s. Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a professor at a rural western college. (The movie was shot in Montana.) His mother has just died, and shortly after, Guidry finds a red van parked on his secluded property. She asks the two hunters who return there to leave, triggering a conflict that continues throughout the film.

I watched the movie on Tuesday night, but I’m not reviewing it here. I will say this about it: despite its beauty and build quality, God’s country was a tough movie to watch.

In a way, it’s by design. Higgins and Ogbonna worked on the script together in 2017, and although they started from the perspective of people who wanted to dramatize America’s strained relationship with race, the resulting film resists any straightforward reading and direct.

Part of that complexity stems from the time Higgins and Ogbonna had to work on the script. They started filming in late February 2020 and shut down after three weeks, sending everyone home before the coronavirus pandemic shut down transportation completely.

“We made a bunch of changes that I think made the movie stronger,” Higgins said. The May 2020 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police sparked a new round of national soul-searching about race, and the screenwriters watched closely. “Throughout the process, Shaye and I tried to incorporate what we saw into the script.”

Depending on the broadcast, God’s country could sink into the murky waters of American discourse like a heavy, flat rock. It doesn’t take much to imagine a political crank turning the film’s carefully crafted characters into types who can be launched into our seemingly inexhaustible culture wars.

Such a possibility is less of a concern for Higgins now than it was when he and Ogbonna were shaping the script.

“Shaye and I are very aware of the politicized landscape in this country,” he said. “But we wanted to make a film that wouldn’t be easily dismissed.”

While the film embodies national tensions, it does so without many of what Higgins called “indicators” that would point to the political context.

“Our idea was to try to negate those indicators and make them harder to monitor,” he said.

That’s what art is for: showing us life, not political posturing.

“The instinct to make the movie definitely came from a place where we had to be actively engaged in an alarming situation,” Higgins said. But with the work finished, “our goal was to express the dynamics of what we saw.”

Newton’s casting was critical to the film’s success, Higgins said. Although he had already secured funding, he felt the film could not be made without her. He spent two weeks writing a one-page letter to the English actor and sent it to his agent along with the script.

“My hunch was correct that she would respond to it and want to do it,” Higgins said.

She also became “a true partner in the process,” he said, leading the way on set. Newton’s performance should make her a contender for major awards, he said.

Higgins is currently working on a new screenplay, a survival film which, like God’s countryfocuses on the inner life of a character in the midst of grandiose landscapes.

He credited his upbringing in Hanover with launching him into a career as an artist. In addition to being teachers, his parents are both moviegoers. His mother, Lynn, who teaches at Dartmouth, favors films centered on the characters of post-war French cinema; his father, Roland, a professor at Keene State College, prefers epic films. Director Akira Kurosawa is a favorite. Higgins’ tastes and interests, unsurprisingly, combine the two.

More importantly, the people of Hanover encouraged him to pursue the arts, not a common line of conversation between adults and teenagers.

“It’s so important when you’re young and passionate about an art form…to have people around you who say, ‘You’re doing great. Keep on going.’ said Higgins.

Another Hanover High graduate, Anthony Ciardelli, served as an executive producer on God’s country. Higgins has known him since middle school and they wrote together for the high school newspaper.

“Anthony single-handedly made this movie possible,” Higgins said. “He was one of the first to read the script, he was our first production partner, he was our first investor and he saw the film through to the end, from financing to production to exit.”

Despite changes to his original story, Burke supported the film adaptation and wrote enthusiastically in support after Higgins hosted a screening in Missoula, Mt. He said in a statement on his website that he and other members of the public were “astounded,” and Higgins said he’s seen this kind of quiet reflection in other audiences who have seen God’s country.

“People appreciate that the movie trusts the audience,” Higgins said.

Whether Americans can learn to trust each other is another matter.

Taylor Swift is ready for it.

The singer-songwriter has revealed she’s been very interested in making her feature film directorial debut – she’s just waiting for the right project to come along.

“I would love to keep taking small steps forward,” she said during an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she screened her short. Very good. “But I’m at a place where the next baby step isn’t a baby step. That would be committing to making a movie.”

She added, “I would love for the right opportunity to come along. I love telling stories this way. If it was the right thing, it would be a privilege and an honor.”

Swift also acknowledged her privilege of getting funding for her short film, giving shoutouts to female filmmakers who don’t have access to the same resources she does. “There are people who work so hard to get funding and to get any kind of budget together,” she said. “I bow my hat and tip my hat to these female directors.”

Swift has also cited many filmmakers who have influenced her, from pioneer Nora Ephron to contemporary authors like Greta Gerwig, Chloe Zhao and her close friend Lena Dunham.

Ultimately, Swift said her job, whether it’s a movie or a song, is “to tell human stories about human emotion.”

“I have a lot of bandwidth to put into creative things,” she explained of her prodigious output as a performer, songwriter, and now filmmaker. “I love doing stuff. For the last five or six years, I’ve just been like, I love doing stuff. I’m going to keep working hard, trying my best.”

She concluded, “I would absolutely love to expand in terms of filmmaking and storytelling. It’s a natural extension of my writing, and as long as I can continue to do all the natural extensions of my writing. Doing shows is a natural extension of my writing. I like that too.

DC Fandome canceled

The year was 2020. DC Comics and Warner Bros created a virtual global experience to rival Disney’s Investor Day. This event was known as the DC Fandome! DC Fandome shared exclusive content and interactive experiences with fans around the world. It only grew in 2021. Fans will be disappointed to learn that this year’s DC Fandome has been canceled and it may stay that way. A statement was released by Warner & Discovery,

“With the return of in-person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at many comics around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022.”

The decision not to host FanDome also comes during a transition period for DC at Warner Bros. Discovery, the company trying to find a producer to oversee film and TV in the company, in a role similar to Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige at Disney. It also coincides with changes to its HBO Max streaming app, which has seen the cancellation of numerous shows and movies, including Batgirl. Ezra Miller managed to survive the DC Purge.

Desperate Simon Williams agrees and transforms into an ion-powered being with superhuman powers. His powers are tested and he is shown to have great superhuman strength and great durability, even defeating the executioner.
