Cate Blanchett to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s first English language feature – Film Stories
Oscar winner Cate Blanchett signed on to star in Pedro Almodóvar A Handbook for Housekeepers.
Based on a collection of short stories by Lucia Berlin, A Handbook for Housekeepers contains various stories focusing on female protagonists with demanding jobs. The adaptation will be Almodóvar’s feature debut in the English language, having directed an English-language short with Tilda Swinton in 2020. Variety has confirmed that Cate Blanchett will star in the film. His production company, Dirty Films, is also set to co-produce the film alongside New Republic Pictures.
Almodóvar is an extremely well-established director, whose films in Spanish are known for their melodramatic storytelling. In 2002, he won the Oscar for best original screenplay for Talk to him. His last movie, Parallel mothers starring Penélope Cruz, is due out in UK cinemas at the end of this month.
Blanchett is also renowned for her acting abilities and has been equally busy. She stars in Guillermo del Toro’s thriller Film Noir alley of nightmares with Bradley Cooper and Rooney Mara. The star also made a memorable appearance in Adam McKay’s much-discussed Netflix comedy Don’t look up.
A Handbook for Housekeepers is currently in the early stages of development, with Almodóvar telling Variety that he originally wrote the script in Spanish before translating everything into English.
